Why enriching and protecting biodiversity are key to addressing climate change

Adam Sacks is a climate activist, writer, and Executive Director of Biodiversity for a Livable Climate.

On this podcast episode, Adam sheds light on how biodiversity loss may be a greater threat to our planet than climate change; why we need to include the conservation of biodiversity as a key climate health solution; how real-life stories of regeneration around the world prove that we already know what it takes to rebuild healthy, resilient ecosystems (as shared continually on Bio4Climate's Facebook page and the recommended book Paradise Lot); and more.

To start, get a glimpse below into the conversation between Adam and Green Dreamer Podcast's host, Kaméa Chayne.

On the unforeseen cost of increasing ‘carrying capacity’:

“We humans are a rather odd species.

We have a great deal of cleverness, we have opposable thumbs, and we are very good at expanding carrying capacity—our ability to take the habitat we’re living in that only wants to give us 1,000 pounds of food per acre and get it to give us 100,000 pounds of food per acre.

But there is a price for that. And we're now seeing the price for not only industrial agriculture, but [also] for 10,000 years of disrupting planetary ecosystems.”

On what's missing from conventional climate solutions:

“I’ve learned that everything is connected, and there isn’t anything I’ve done that doesn’t have an impact on the way I think, the way I connect ideas and observations and processes that need to take place.

So I’ve been primed to look at climate from a systems perspective , and I think that is one of the things that is most lacking in our conventional approach to climate.

It’s something we desperately need to ramp up because climate is not just about greenhouse gases; it’s about so much more.”

Adam’s closing words of wisdom:

"These are very frightening times. We need to proactively address the root causes of climate change and begin restoring life to the land everywhere we can—from a front yard to a national park, to an entire continent.

We are in a whole lot of trouble, but there are still many positive and productive steps we can take to avert the calamities heading our way. There is no time to lose.”
