That dance class really opened my perspective. I realized that embodiment, dance, movement, and art were just as valid entry points into speaking about climate change as science.

Here’s Kailea on how Loam publishes as praxis:

“Being a climate justice storyteller is so much about moving away from extractive storytelling, and that is definitely a core value that we work with at Loam. There’s a lot of consent that we practice when putting pieces together with our contributors—we always make sure that our contributors, if they’re writing or speaking about a story [that is not their own personal story], that the reader has a really clear, contextualized understanding about who [the contributor] is in relationship to the people that they’re covering. There has to be a real embodied place that the contributor is speaking or writing from.

If [one of our contributors] tells a story that’s touching on their own life, we oftentimes ask that contributor to provide a deeper context into who they are as a person and why it is that they do the work they do. We want to be able to connect with our readers from a space that feels not just aligned in terms of values but can leave an impact.

We’re not a normal style of journalism because journalism sometimes can feel cold and removed. We’re trying to create heart-centered ways of connecting to people around large topics—like the climate crisis, issues related to social justice, or topics related to the ways that we choose to self-identify.”
